Build for xcode simulator without signing identity?

I am wanting to test my app in the xcode ios simulator but not distribute it at all. Do I still have to sign up for the $99 developer account to get a signing identity? Is there nothing like the debug keystore on Android where you can use it just for development but can't distribute with it?
