Device PPI and Images

Given an image sized at 320 x 480 is displayed on the nexus1 and on the iphone.
Wouldn't the image quality be better on one than the other since their pixels per inch specs are different ?

If that is so, then doesn't dpi (or ppi) actually play a part in creating the original image.

Given your proposed resolution of 320x480 for the image, there would be no noticeable differences between the two devices if the image is of a high enough quality and was scaled to fit the screen size of each device. You would however notice a difference if the image was of a low quality such as a highly compressed JPEG. Screen size also plays a roll in visual quality. If you look at an image on a 20 inch computer monitor it might look pixelated or blurry, but if you looked at the same image on an iPhone with a 3.5 inch screen it would look crisp and sharp. Image resolution is important but if you use a high quality image format such as PNG and low compression, you can get away with lower resolution images and save memory which in turn can decrease load times and improve performance for your app.
